Here's an example of a nicely upgraded Irish Bozouki. You could call it an octave
mandolin, I guess, depending on how it's tuned. I generally make the distinction
based on scale length. The shorter scale version of this instrument is handier
for tuning in fifths and playing melodies. The longer scale version, as pictured
here, is sometimes tuned in a more open tuning and used for chords and rhythm.
The owner of this instrument wanted something very special and specified maple bindings,
sunburst top finish, Indian rosewood back and sides, special 12th fret inlay, and
one of my proprietary soundboard pickups. This one sounds great with a very full,
rich, slightly dark tone and very strong, crisp fundamentals.
